Somebody in Washington decided a lake older than the country needed a rebrand. Rochester declined.
This one goes out to everyone who grew up on that shoreline. Who drives out to Charlotte in October just to watch the water do its thing. Who knows exactly what the air smells like when the wind comes off the lake in April and goes straight through your jacket.
It's called Lake Ontario. It was called Lake Ontario before any of us got here, and it'll be called Lake Ontario long after the current nonsense is a trivia question.
The scent: Sea salt and cypress up front, cold and a little wet, like standing on the pier with your hands in your pockets. Bergamot cuts through it. Black pepper keeps the whole thing from getting sentimental about itself.
